Common Juniper

The Common Juniper is a small tree or shrub that is very typical in Kilden. The tree is part of the cypress family. Its berries are used to make jin and other (alcoholic) drinks. The wood is sometimes used for making small woodcarvings and has a robust much-beloved scent.

Vöhren is known for having one of the most beautiful Juniper forests in the world. Thousands of intertwined Junipers look like they are all part of one single tree. Because of its beauty, the forest is protected and constantly supervised by a forest ranger.

The Juniper tree also has a high symbolic value, as it is believed that a good spirit is hidden inside its branches, helping those in need—especially people who are lost in the forest.
