August Mervell was born on June 27, 1829 as the slightly younger child of twin brothers Hubertus Mervell and Marie Hoff. His elder brother is Alexander Mervell. August was born on the Mervell family estate in Lutheria.

Like his brother, August was sent off to boarding school. He was expected to learn about economics and law. Unlike his brother, August did not take school seriously and would rather play with his schoolmates or cause mischief. During his first few weeks, he even managed to almost get expelled, if it weren't for his father putting in a good word.

After completing his boarding school, August manages to obtain a diploma, two years after his brother. However, he is not yet ready to start his professional career as he wants to enjoy his bachelor life. His parents do not agree with his decision and decide not to provide him with any financial support. Therefore, his brother Alexander lends him money to support his living expenses. August spends the borrowed money on extravagant parties, living life to the fullest. At one of these parties, August meets Cornelia Von Galen, a noble woman whom his parents hope can tame August and pressure him into marrying her.

August Mervell and Cornalia Von Galen were in a long courtship before they finally decided to get married. The union was mostly based on the acquisition of wealth between the two families. Although the families hoped that the marriage would inspire August and Cornelia to become more serious, the opposite happened. They encouraged each other to spend their money on unnecessary things, constantly boasting about their wealth and status.
